Ghassan Bannoura – PNN Exclusive – As the Israeli Navy announced exercises to counter the international Gaza Freedom Flotilla 2, Izat Shaheen, organizer from the Turkish IHH (Humanitarian Relief Foundation), told PNN today that repairs are still under way on the Mavi Marmara ship and it could be part of the convoy this year.
On May 31, 2010 the Israeli Navy attacked Mavi Marmara as it was sailing to Gaza in international waters killing 9 Turkish aid workers on board.
“I want to clarify that the flotilla 2 is on the way… and will sail in the last week of June,” said Shaheen, “we must differentiate between the whole flotilla and the Turkish part of Mavi Marmara It is still under preparation. I hope we’ll complete the technical preparations. Because they damaged the boat it took a long time to repair and will need more time.”
According to Israeli military sources the navy is planning to use non-lethal weapons to avoid what they called “past mistakes.”
“Until the conditions in Palestine: Gaza, West Bank, Jerusalem..Until the conditions change, occupation end and the siege differed, we’ll continue our civil initiatives as the international corporations,” Shaheen told PNN on Wednesday.
Shaheen concluded by wondering why the Israelis continue to target IHH while it is part of a coalition of tens of nations mobilizing ships to break the Israeli-imposed siege on Gaza for four years.
